$40 to sit next to who you're with

Booked two seats together for my 4-year-old and me. Nope that's extra. Turns out "sitting next to your own kid" is a premium feature now. Checked in, went to pick seats, and there it was: $40 to sit together, or roll the dice and hope a stranger doesn't mind trading with a toddler mid-flight. Paid it. Of course I paid it. What was I going to do, let a four-year-old sit alone in 14C while I'm in 22F? The airline knows that. That's the whole business model... sell you the anxiety, then sell you the fix.
